Really bad news this week: the Tsutaya rental DVD and music shop (in Odori, Sapporo) is closing down. Is it moving to a new location? We didn't hear any news about that. So it is terrible news for people who love smaller, independent and international films. Of course, many people are watching films on Amazon and Netflix, but these big platforms offer thousands of films; it is too difficult to find and discover the films that will be meaningful and important for you.
Browsing the shelves at Tsutaya's "mini theatre" section, you could easily find many of the greatest, most important films of the past 50 years. You could learn about school-children in Iran (Kiarostami), anti-government theatre in Greece (Angelopoulos), the lonely individual in Soviet Russia (Tarkovsky), poor farmers in Northern Italy (Ermanno Olmi); and we could also discover the extraordinary films of Luis Bunuel and Michael Haneke.
Not only cinema: the Tsutaya shop also had an amazing collection of TV drama, including the complete archive of the original 1984 British drama Sherlock Holmes, with Jeremy Brett.
We hope that Tsutaya will re-open in a new location. The Odori shop had a unique collection of international cultural treasure, some of the greatest cinema which has ever been produced.
