Theatres and Musicals have been closed since March 2020. 16 months! A long time without the power and emotion of live music. We still cannot go to live concerts, but the second best option in Sapporo this month is to go to Theatre Kino, and watch a fantastic musical film: American Utopia.
Filmed last year in a New York Broadway Theatre, featuring music written by David Byrne (of Talking Heads) and performed by 12 musicians/dancers, the show brings together dance, story-telling, humour, technology, instrumentation, politics (Black Lives Matter and support for "taking the knee"), and a vocalist who holds our attention for the whole film.
David Byrne has been making great music since 1977, but even if you don't know any of his music you can still enjoy this wonderful concert film. It is especially moving when we see the audience dancing and clearly enjoying every moment of the show. We remember how much we miss live music. Covid 19 has prevented us from enjoying such experiences, but more importantly it has denied so many great musicians the chance to show their talent and earn a basic salary.
American Utopia is at Theatre Kino in Sapporo, until July 30th
