This week at Theatre Kino in Sapporo, we have the chance to see a great British documentary film. Made by one of Brisco’s favourite directors Mark Cousins, “The Story of Film” is an almost 3 hour long documentary about cinema in the 21st-century.
We see clips from more than 100 films. Mark Cousins helps us to understand what has changed in the cinema of the past 20 years. Storytelling, camera movement, new sound technologies, computer imaging, and the human face behind masks: so many things have changed since the year 2000.
Mark Cousins’ soft Irish narration guides us through all these changes. He recommends good films and he tries to instruct us to watch films more carefully. There are now thousands of films available for us to choose on the many online streaming platforms. It’s difficult to find the great films, the special films. “The Story of Film” helps us to discover the few important films, the ones that we might enjoy. (And Mark Cousins is a man of taste, he even has a tattoo on his arm, “Ozu Yasujiro”).
Some cinemas have closed because of the Covid pandemic, but audiences are still hungry to return to the best way to experience the beauty of cinema. If you have time this week, try to get along to Theatre Kino.. You know it’s important!
