Britain's National Theatre has a great tradition of high-quality theatre performances. The National Theatre building is in the centre of London, beside the River Thames. It is usually difficult to buy tickets for their productions. But now at Sapporo Cinema Frontier, we have a chance to see some of these wonderful shows, in a series of big screen events.
Of course 'Live Theatre' is special, and these performances are not 'Live Theatre', but most theatres have been closed for the past 18 months. This is a rare opportunity for us to enjoy the best of traditional British acting, writing, set design and direction. In some of the productions, we can see famous actors: Ian McKellen, Carey Mulligan, Mark Strong. We can enjoy classically-trained actors who are some of the most beautiful speakers of the English language.
Most of the events are quite long, around 3 hours for each show. It gives us the time to become deeply involved in the story. Unlike cinema, the text, the language is the important thing (English audio with Japanese subtitles). Here at Brisco, we are especially looking forward to "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" based on the fantastic novel by Mark Haddon, about a 15 year-old boy who has Asperger's Syndrome. Other highlights include Shakespeare's "King Lear", "No Man's Land" by the Nobel-Prize winner Harold Pinter, and "A View from the Bridge" by America's greatest playwright Arthur Miller.
We have been starved of Live Theatre for almost two years. These events at Cinema Frontier offer us a rich menu of food for the soul. Some of the best theatre of the past few years, and it is coming to Sapporo.. Make sure you go and see at least one of the productions!
From November 19th to December 9th, at Cinema Frontier, Sapporo
(Thanks to Brisco student S-san for telling me about these events)
