Here at Brisco Culture School, we want to celebrate a new book that has just been published in Sapporo. "The Spirit of Huci" is a collection of short articles about Ainu culture, written by Tomoko Keira. Originally published in Japanese, in the Hokkaido Shinbun newspaper about 25 years ago, it is now published in a beautiful bilingual edition (Japanese and English). "Huci" means elderly women in Ainu language, and Tomoko wanted to tell her readers about the wisdom of the older Ainu women in Hokkaido. Now, we have an English version, so many more readers can enjoy her stories. (Unfortunately Tomoko passed away in 2016, but her friend Michiyo Yoshida and a team of translators have been able to complete this English translation). The new book is available in all good bookstores; we also have some copies of the book at our Brisco office.
